The Grumman F4F Wildcat was the carrier based airplane that carried most of the burden at the beginning of WW2. It was sturdy built, with good armored protection and heavily armed, with 6 50 caliber machine guns. Although it wasn’t as maneuverable as the Japanese Zero, it proved to be a worthy adversary and gave a fighting chance for the Allies. Later on it was replaced by F6F Hellcat, a design that would prove to be devastated for the Imperial Japanese Air force.
